​A writing program should empower teachers to use a variety of teaching approaches to meet the needs of individual learners and address the following components:
  • Curriculum and Instruction
  • Formative and summative assessments
  • Professional learning and support services
  • Administrative leadership support and monitoring
The following tools may be used to assist schools in establishing a literacy team and provide guidance as they develop, implement, monitor and sustain their literacy plan.

Literacy Leadership-Stories of Schoolwide Success
KET and the Kentucky Department of Education visited a variety of schools in Kentucky and interviewed principals, literacy coaches, curriculum specialists, state educational cooperative literacy consultants and teachers in an effort to capture the type of leadership described in research-based standards.
