Eligibility and Testing for School Bus Inspector Certification
To become a Certified School Bus Inspector in Kentucky, individuals must meet the following requirements:

Eligibility:
- Experience: A minimum of two (2) years of experience in the inspection, maintenance, or repair of heavy trucks or school buses.

Driver's License: Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger (P) endorsement.

Testing:

Classroom Instruction: Successful completion of an eight (8) hour classroom instruction.

Hands-On Assessment: Successful completion of a practical skills evaluation administered by a certified School Bus Inspector Instructor.
Recertification
Per
702 KAR 5:030, all certified school bus inspectors must complete a four-hour recertification training class annually to retain certification.
2026 School Bus Inspector 4-Hour Recertification Class Schedule
Due to 4th quarter travel restrictions affecting KDE, 4-hour recertification classes will be handled regionally by the district inspector Instructors. Please check back after May 11th for more details.
