Use the links in this section of the website to learn more about the opportunities available to Kentucky high school students to learn at a faster pace and/or earn college credit before they graduate.

Kentucky is committed to ensuring that every student has access to rigorous learning opportunities that align with their strengths, interests and future goals. Advanced coursework provides pathways for students to deepen their knowledge, accelerate learning, and demonstrate readiness for college, career and life. Across the Commonwealth, students may participate in a variety of advanced learning options, including Advanced Placement (AP), dual credit, honors courses, early college opportunities, career pathway programs and other accelerated experiences offered through local schools and postsecondary partnerships.

Participation in advanced coursework allows students to engage with challenging content, develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and, in many cases, earn college credit while still in high school. For example, Advanced Placement (AP) courses provide college-level study that may translate into college credit based on exam performance. Likewise, dual credit courses enable students to earn both high school and college credit simultaneously, often reducing the time and cost required to complete a postsecondary credential. These opportunities support Kentucky’s broader goal of preparing students for successful transitions beyond high school.

KRS 158.6453(21) requires local school districts to adopt a plan establishing clear policies on the promotion of advanced coursework or accelerated learning in language arts, mathematics, social studies and science by grade level for students in grades 4-12. To support schools and districts in their advanced coursework policies, the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) has developed guidance on the consistent use of preliminary assessment data and other criteria to identify students. The KDE encourages districts to prioritize open enrollment in advanced or accelerated coursework for any student who demonstrates an interest in more rigorous opportunities. The ILP process helps to eliminate barriers by ensuring all students receive information and guidance on the availability of advanced coursework, not just those meeting certain scores or eligibility criteria. For additional considerations, visit the KDE’s Advanced Coursework webpage.

Students and families are encouraged to speak with their school counselor or school leadership to learn more about the advanced coursework opportunities available at their school.
