The Kentucky Department of Education, Office of Special Education and Early Learning, Division of State Schools, has an opening for a Houseparent I at the Kentucky School for the Deaf in Danville.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

Supervise students in dormitory programs to maintain accountability for student's whereabouts, safety, and welfare.

Verify the whereabouts of each student. Accurate count of students and knowledge of whereabouts of all students under supervision.

Provides dorm security by securing doors and windows and documentation of rounds and records appropriate to department – status reports, daily Houseparent report, & maintenance requests.

Escort students to and supervise in cafeteria and to school every morning.

Provide student literacy enhancement such as collecting data, materials, and ideas for dorm activities, creating word walls, gathering photos /info for web page, bulletin boards, finding ideas for craft projects.

Provide a rich language environment via communications with students, news and weather updates, questions of the day, things you need to know, vocabulary labels.

Provide general cleaning of assigned dorms and common areas for a home-like atmosphere and safety. Supervise and assign students to do duties such as dorm cleaning, making beds, and cleaning trash cans.

Check dorm and rooms each morning for cleanliness, wet towels, trash, laundry as necessary; doors locked, water and lights off at the end of the shift.

Assists with washing clothes and towels.

Provides necessary care for sick students. Guides students in appropriate personal hygiene to include cleanliness, hair care, and personal appearance.

Plan and implement educational programs to reinforce life skills and American Sign Language (ASL)/English mastery striving to provide the best language accessible learning environment.

Maintain records pertinent to dorm operations and discipline.

Called upon to help with student supervision when asked to work in other dormitory, an open weekend or emergency/snow/crisis situations. Decorates seasonally, homelike touches.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Preferred Skills:

Gross Monthly Salary Range: $1,973.74 - $2,960.60
