Academic Program Consultant – Secondary Social Studies - MOA

The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE), Office of Teaching and Learning (OTL), Division of Program Standards (DPS) has an opening for an academic program consultant focusing on providing secondary support in the social studies.​

Duties and Responsibilities:

Work with districts, schools and teachers in the development and implementation of academic standards.

Develop resources to support the implementation of the KAS for Social Studies.

Serve as a state lead/point of contact and provide expertise in social studies for the Department of Education and key partner organizations in regard to highly effective teaching, learning and assessment.

Work with school districts, professional organizations, colleges and universities and education cooperatives to develop and disseminate resource materials and professional learning opportunities.

Implement program goals as identified by the Division of Program Standards and the KDE Strategic Plan.   

Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred Skills:

Expertise in Social Studies Content & Pedagogy – Strong knowledge of civics, economics, geography and history.

Clear & Concise Writing – Ability to craft accessible reports, guidance documents and instructional materials.

Information Synthesis – Skilled in analyzing and integrating complex research, policy documents and educational trends.

Knowledge of the Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) for Social Studies – Understanding of the state standards document and expectations.

Professional Development Facilitation – Ability to design and facilitate training sessions and coach educators in best practices to support implementation of the KAS for Social Studies.

Required Experience and Education:
 
Must be a graduate of a college or university with a master's degree in education or related field.

Must have five years of professional experience in education.

Current Rank II or Rank I certification by the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board will substitute for the required educational requirement.

Additional professional experience in the field of education will substitute for the required educational requirement on a year-for-year basis. 

Must have professional experience in secondary social studies instruction.

This position will provide guidance through the development of resources to support the implementation of the Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) for Social Studies (704 KAR 8:060) and provide guidance for the implementation of legislation passed by Congress and Kentucky Revised Statutes (KRS) that are applicable to social studies, including, but not limited to, the following:  KRS 158.197, KRS 158.141, KRS 156.160, KRS 158.175, KRS 158.075, KRS 158.6450, KRS 158.196.

Applicants currently under contract with a local school district or regional educational cooperative are required to provide a written release from their superintendent or director prior to an offer of employment will be given. 
 
NOTE: This position will be filled through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA). The applicant selected for this position must be an employee of a Kentucky local school district, regional educational cooperative, or institution of higher education.
