Teacher Appreciation In May
In recognition of National Teacher Day and Teacher Appreciation Week, the Kentucky Board of Education recently issued a resolution that expresses gratitude to the state's teachers for their hard work and dedication.
Teacher Appreciation Week begins May 8, and National Teacher Day will be celebrated on May 9. This is an appropriate time to let your child's teacher get a word of thanks for the outstanding job they do.
The board's resolution can be viewed by clicking here. For more information about National Teacher Day, visit the National Education Association's Web site.
School Report Cards
The last of the School Report Cards are being mailed out. If you're a parent of a child in a public school in Kentucky, you should have received or will soon receive a School Report Card in the mail. These Report Cards provide valuable information about your child's school – test scores, attendance rates, safety measures and what the school is doing to improve.
These Report Cards are required by law and are intended to inform parents about their child's school. These Report Cards can't tell parents everything but provide a good starting point for parents to hold discussions with teachers and administrators. Private College Week
Parents are being encouraged to get their high school-age children to explore Kentucky's nonprofit four-year colleges and universities during the third annual Kentucky Private College Week, June 12-16. Twenty private colleges will offer campus tours and information sessions on admissions, financial aid, and campus life at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. (local time) each day for prospective students. During PCW students can visit two campuses per day, up to 10 during the week.
Students who visit participating campuses during Private College Week receive application fee waivers. Private College Week is sponsored by the Association of Independent Kentucky Colleges and Universities (AIKCU) and its member campuses. For more information, visit www.aikcu.org or call (502) 695-5007.
Breakfast Contest
Students can enter an essay contest about the importance of breakfast. National School Breakfast week was March 6-10, but you have until May 31 to enter this contest.
The contest is open to schoolchildren nationwide, between the ages of 5 and 18. All are invited to write a poem, an essay, or even a song about why breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Submissions are due by May 31, 2006.
Four winners from across the United States will be announced in July. Winning entries will be chosen by a committee of judges made up of representatives from each of the campaign partners. Each winner will be featured on a Fall 2006 edition of the "got breakfast?" poster, to be displayed in schools in their area. They will also win a laptop computer and receive free "grab-and-go" boxed Breakfast Breaks for their school for a week.

Seeking Nominations
The Kentucky Board of Education is re-opening nominations for a vacant position on the Kentucky High School Athletics Association (KHSAA) Board of Control.
The KHSAA is the Kentucky Board of Education's designee to manage statewide interscholastic athletic programs. The Board of Control supervises KHSAA, establishes staff salaries, sets goals for the association and has the authority to set rules and review proposed changes to the KHSAA constitution and bylaws.
The vacancy on the Board of Control is being created by the only female appointee, which means the appointee to fill the vacancy must be a female. The nominee will complete the term of the current vacant position, which runs from June 2006 to June 30, 2010.
All interested individuals are encouraged to submit a letter of interest, a resume and a minimum of two written letters of recommendation to the Kentucky Department of Education. The deadline for applications is May 8. Materials should be sent to Michael D. Dailey, KHSAA Liaison, 17th Floor, 500 Mero St., Frankfort KY 40601. The Kentucky Board of Education will review recommendations for the Kentucky High School Athletics Board of Control at-large position at its June 2006 meeting.
