This site includes resources for books-on-line, software which reads text, as well as web search engines which teachers can use to integrate the Internet into their classroom and much, much more.

Assistive and Adaptive Technology: This web site was created to provide information about assistive technology, including available resources, such as the Assistive Technology Matrix, and services that are provided throughout the Commonwealth.  Assistive Technology Resources in Kentucky.

 

Books to Read on Line: The Internet is wonderful, but it's hardly a bookstore. While there's every sort of information available and you can buy books on-line, you still can't browse through a book before you buy it like you can in a real store. That's a serious drawback.  So, We've posted the complete texts, or a significant portion, of the following books. Now you can browse through each of the books listed below as long as you wish so you'll know before you place your order that it's what you really want.  Stenhouse Publishing.

 

Digital Text:  This page contains information for obtaining digital text for use with text or screen readers.  Specific information includes:

     E-Text Resources:  This page contains links to sources on the internet for 

     downloading or reading online,  accessible digital text (text which can be read

     aloud with text or screen readers)
     Text Reader:  This web site contains information about software that elec-

     tronically reads aloud digital text.
     Text Reader in Kentucky: This site contains information about schools using text

     reader software in Kentucky.

     Text Reader in Kentucky Video: Teachers and students talk about the benefits of

     using text readers.  For the first time students who have difficulty reading have the

     confidence to tackle written material and participate in class.

     Universal Learning Center (ULC):  A national consortium created by the Center

     for Applied Special Technology (CAST) for databank of accessible digital

     textbooks.  Kentucky and California are the first members.  The ULC is in the 

     process of digitizing Harcourt Brace Social Studies, grades 4-6, in the design of

     'smart text'. This format, also referred to as scaffolded or supported text, recreates

     the original printed book with supports for students with learning disabilities. 

     Supports may include chapter outlines, graphic organizers, video clips, etc.

 

Free E-Books:  This site list web links to books, which can be downloaded or read on line.  Text can be blown up for students with visual disabilities.  Depending on format and accessibility these books might be read aloud with text or screen readers.  See E-Text Resources for list of sites with accessible digital text (text which can be read aloud with text or screen readers).

 

Kentucky Virtual High School: This is a statewide educational service delivering high school courses and online learning opportunity to Kentuckians.  KVHS courses are delivered to public high schools through the Kentucky Education Technology System.

 

Kentucky Virtual Library:  If you have a library card from a Kentucky Library then you are eligible to use the Kentucky Virtual Library.

 

Literacy and Technology Articles - This page lists web sites for research regarding use of technology in schools to improve student performance.

 

MarcoPolo: This site provides offers teachers a powerful search engine to search throughout all content web sites and other valuable resources for teachers to help them integrate the internet into their classroom.

        MarcoPolo is a partnership between the MarcoPolo Education Foundation and eight renowned educational organizations:  the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the International Reading Association, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the National Council on Economic Education, the National Council of Teachers of English, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the National Geographic Society.

 

        MarcoPolo also offers professional development training and materials on Internet integration.

 

Teacher Technology Resources: Creative Kentucky teachers are constantly in search of best practices for teaching and learning.  Links to online lessons, teacher "strategies that work," suggestions for inquiry-based learning, technology standards, and more are provided in the links on this page.

 

WebQuests:  This page will contain a searchable database of activities, handouts, syllabi, PowerPoint slides and other documents used in teaching others how to develop and use WebQuests.
