KDE Jobs and Careers for 8th Grade Standards-Based Unit of Study

Last Updated on Thursday, August 02, 2007 at 5:04 AM

This unit was developed by KDE in collaboration with the following Jefferson County teachers: Linda Collins, Farmsley Middle School, Dr. Shirley Bourne, Noe Middle School, and Denise Watts-Wilson, Kammerer Middle School.

Teachers were given updated information by KDE staff on the Unit of Studies process, the KDE Curriculum Planning Map with the criteria for each piece, and the Attributes of a Unit of Study. After this they were provided a Cardiovascular Health Unit to study and a template to use in the development of the unit. Using this information, Vocational Studies standards, instructional and assessment activities, and resources they have used in their classrooms, the unit was developed. The process was monitored by KDE staff and as the unit was developed it was reviewed and suggestions were made for revisions as appropriate.

This unit is closely connected to the KDE Curriculum Planning Map process and criteria and the Attributes of a Unit of Study. It has a strong connection to real life. By the end of this unit as a Culminating Project the students will compile, analyze, and evaluate information that is needed to begin work on an Individual Graduation Plan (IGP). The unit is divided into Instructional Plans with standards, essential content, essential questions, enabling knowledge and skills and processes, for each Activity (Lesson) Plan that include materials, instructional and assessment activities, and resources. A glossary of terms with definitions used in the unit is also provided.
