Knott County's desire to apply for a KDE Math Academy Grant stemmed from a long discussion with Administrators, teachers and Central Office personnel about the most effective, systemic way to bring about improvement. Mathematics scores and all other data had been analyzed and a gap analysis completed which reflected a great need to address the area of Probability/Statistics. We felt that planning for effective instruction was just as important as professional development in the content and knew that effective instruction, coupled with the content knowledge enhancement of teachers would result in improved instruction for students. We approached the Math Academy from that perspective. If teachers plan well and also increase their knowledge of content and/or strategies, then students will benefit and test scores will support that. Good planning---developed and reinforced/refined in follow-up days will continue to strengthen mathematics instruction. Units developed during the June 2004 Knott County Math Academy will be refined and others developed to support the initial goal of the grant proposal. K-12 teachers and collaborative Special Education Teachers can and do work together and units developed with collegial support will be stronger and will more likely be shared with other teachers and teacher teams.
Description: The activities in this primary unit on Statistics involve the use of easily obtainable and inexpensive objects as manipulatives. We feel these activities are ones that the classroom teacher can use to supplement instruction along with their math textbook and other resources.
