Middle School Math
Prior to aligning the curriculum, we were not only observing overlaps and/or gaps in the curriculum across the district but even within the same grade level at the school. Analysis of data also reflected this inconsistency. We obviously needed to address the issue and align the curriculum according to National Standards, Core Content & Program of Studies. A few years ago we commissioned Ron Pelfrey to work with the Instructional Supervisor and grade level teachers to help align and map the curriculum. At the end of the year, the same district committee met to evaluate the effectiveness of the original map. Adjustments in time frames were made at that time. Two years later, we brought in grade level teachers from each school to once again refine the document. Both vertical and horizontal articulation occurred again at this time. Teachers within and across grade levels openly communicated expectations, Program of Studies requirements, resources and shared effective strategies. This past year the district once again facilitated articulations and used the curriculum documents to determine textbook adoption. We felt it imperative to have both vertical and horizontal articulation throughout the entire process, especially in this transitional year. Throughout the entire process, 5th & 7th grade teachers were very involved with the development of this particular grade level map.It is difficult to see how one could effectively design a curriculum map without the ownership and expertise from the various grade levels. We have initiated the next phase of the curriculum alignment process by partnering with Jessamine County. We just completed a weeklong Math Academy with grade level teachers from both districts collaborating and designing quality performance tasks and KCCT-like assessments. We feel that student outcomes and grade level benchmarks will ultimately result from this initiative.
