The Kentucky Department of Education facilitated the creation of this map and the description below.

KDE 6th Grade Mathematics

The following curriculum map is intended for 6th grade mathematics students and is a part of a total K-12 curriculum.  In preparing this map, we used the following documents:

Transformations:  Kentucky's Curriculum Framework

Kentucky Department of Education Core Content for Assessment

National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics

Kentucky Department of Education Program of Studies for Kentucky Schools

Kentucky's Learning Goals and Academic Expectations

Kentucky's Implementation Manual for Mathematics

Overview of Contents

The map is a working document and not all-inclusive thus allowing for teacher input. The map is not a stand-alone document: it is part of a total K-12 math curriculum that would reflect the vertical content alignment for all grades when the total curriculum is reviewed. All core content numbers with MA-M refer to middle school level core content. NCTM refers to National Council of Teachers of Mathematics organization. The mathematics curriculum is broken down into the NCTM strands of:  Number and Computation (A.E. 1.5, 2.7, 2.8, 2.11, 2.12), Geometry and Measurement (A.E. 1.5, 2.5, 2.8, 2.9, 2.10, 2.11), Probability and Statistics (A.E. 1.5, 2.8, 2.9, 2.11, 2.13), and Algebraic Ideas (A.E. 1.5, 2.7, 2.8, 2.9, 2.10, 2.11, 2.12). All Program of Studies numbers with M-6 means 6th Grade followed by the NCTM strands  (ex. M-6-A-4 refers to Math-6th grade- Algebraic Ideas-4th bullet). Some of the concepts in Core Content for Mathematics Assessment Grade 6 Vertical Alignment are not in this sample 6th grade Curriculum Map.  For example, MA-6-2.3.1 is not assessed in the 6th grade and will be taught in 7th grade.  Another example is MA-6-2.2.3 which is taught in the 5th grade and not included in this sample 6th grade map.     Essential questions direct teachers' choices of activities and are the questions students should be able to answer at the end of the course.  Guiding questions may be included to further focus student learning. Sample assessments are only suggestions to provide a variety of assessments including higher order problem solving, application, and performance assessments. Instructional resources may or may not be part of a school's adopted textbook. Included in the map are 30 weeks of planning and possible resources, activities, and assessment allowing time for extensions, integration, and enrichment as needed. Although commercial products are listed in the curriculum map this should not be considered an endorsement by Kentucky Department of Education.

The curriculum map is an overview of the taught and assessed curriculum.  It also serves as a pacing guide and an organizer. The map directs what we teach, not how to teach it.

We used an intentional, research-based focus in developing the curriculum map. It is critical in the planning process to integrate math skills, concepts, and relationships sequentially building a foundation for application of the content. We:

Compared district maps with state documents Reviewed district curriculum maps using a checklist of attributes Researched websites throughout Kentucky and the nation Discussed possible formats of curriculum maps to:  Develop a user-friendly format for parents, teachers, and students Address attributes Focus the teaching of mathematics as real-world Integrate learning of concepts with application and relationships Link content, skills, and assessment Eliminate gaps and overlaps
