(FRANKFORT, Ky.) – Two Kentucky public school students received scholarships through the Southeastern States Pupil Transportation Conference (SESPTC), the Kentucky Department of Education announced today.
SESPTC provides $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors from SESPTC member states. Eligible students must have a parent or guardian employed in the public school pupil transportation field, be graduates of public high schools and plan to attend postsecondary educational institutions in 2007. The scholarship can be used for any part of the students’ 2007-08 school year tuition, books or fees.
Kentucky’s recipients are:
- Britney Paige Barnes, Madison Central High School – Britney is the daughter of Georgia Renee Barnes, who is employed by the Madison County school system’s Pupil Transportation Department. Britney will attend Eastern Kentucky University in the fall.
- Felix Kyle Wright, Morgan County High School – Kyle is the son of John H. Wright, who is employed by the Morgan County school system’s Department of Transportation. Kyle will attend the University of Kentucky in the fall.
Local selection committees in each school district select finalists, whose applications are submitted to the Kentucky SESPTC Scholarship Selection Committee. State applicants are selected based on the following criteria:
- Scholarship - The student must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 for grades 9-11
- Leadership - The student must have demonstrated outstanding leadership skills and abilities in co-curricular activities and community service activities.
- Citizenship - The student must have demonstrated exemplary citizenship qualities that include not only maturity, loyalty, responsibility, integrity and trustworthiness and also a concern for the well-being of all citizens.
- Service - The student will have rendered unselfish service and assistance to others, to the school and to the community.
- Essay - The student will write an essay explaining why he/she applied for the scholarship and how the scholarship will be used.
The Southeastern States Pupil Transportation Conference (SESPTC) is a non-profit corporation created over 55 years ago to host an annual conference focused on educating children of transportation professionals working in the southeast.
The member southeastern states are Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia. Over the last few years, with the support of industry vendors, the SESPTC accumulated funds that the SESPTC Board of Directors disburses in the form of student education scholarships.
