BOARD DISCUSSES TESTING, FACILITIES

            (FRANKFORT, Ky.) – At its regular meeting Wednesday and Thursday, the Kentucky Board of Education heard presentations, had in-depth discussions and made decisions on a number of items.

            The board reviewed information about norm-referenced testing at the elementary and middle school levels, including the effect on the current accountability system and how districts are implementing norm-referenced testing.

            The board heard a presentation from 2007 Kentucky Teacher of the Year Suzanne Burkhardt.

            The board took the following actions:

·        approved district facility plans for the Adair, Allen, Anderson, Ballard, Barren, Boyle, Bracken, Breckinridge, Caldwell, Carter, Campbell, Clark, Estill, Franklin, Fleming, Floyd, Garrard, Grant, Hancock, Harrison, Hopkins, Henry, Knox, Leslie, Livingston, Madison, Marion, Martin, McCracken, Metcalfe, Monroe, Morgan, Rowan, Simpson, Spencer, Trigg, Warren, Wayne and Washington County and Barbourville, Bardstown, Bellevue, Berea, Campbellsville, Cloverport, Dawson Springs, Elizabethtown, Glasgow, Mayfield, Murray, Paintsville, Paducah, Raceland, Russell, Silver Grove and Somerset Independent school districts

·        denied approval for district facilities plans in Martin and Taylor Counties

·        approved facility plan amendments for Jackson County and Owensboro Independent

·        approved the surplus of property at the Kentucky School for the Deaf

·        approved the acquisition of property at Masterson Station and preparation costs for the Fayette County school district

·        approved the reappointment of Jeff Schlosser of Ft. Thomas to the KHSAA Board of Control

·        approved the appointment of Jan Moseley of Louisville to the Kentucky School for the Blind Advisory Board

·        approved the 2008 Kentucky Minimum Bus Specifications for School Buses

·        approved the endorsement of recommendations by the Kentucky Nonpublic Schools Commission for certification of nonpublic schools

·        approved the appointment of John W. Hardy of Campbell County to the State Textbook Commission

·        approved granting a waiver of 704 KAR 3:410, Section 7 (lead teacher requirements for the preschool education program) to Webster County

·        approved appointing a hearing officer for an annexation appeal by the Elizabethtown Independent school district

·        approved appointing a hearing officer for a performance judgment appeal by Fern Creek High School in Jefferson County

·        accepted the Statement of Considerations from public hearings on special education and Kentucky High School Athletics Association regulations

 

 

            Other presentations and review items included an update on the Kentucky School for the Deaf and Kentucky School for the Blind; information about gifted and talented students; and an update on the Title III program for limited English proficient and English language learners.
