BOARD DISCUSSES PROFICIENCY, MINORITIES

            (FRANKFORT, Ky.) – At its regular meeting Wednesday and Thursday, the Kentucky Board of Education heard presentations, had in-depth discussions and made decisions on a number of items.

            The board heard a presentation on the progress toward proficiency in 2014 by Kentucky’s public schools and discussed the urgency needed to ensure that schools make that goal.

            The board heard from former participants in the Minority Superintendent Internship Program (MSIP), which provides support and mentoring to minority individuals wishing to become school district superintendents.

            The board took the following actions:

·        approved district facility plans for the Hardin and Lewis County and Beechwood and Pikeville Independent school districts

·        approved 2006-07 local district tax rates levied

·        approved a site for proposed new schools in Jessamine County

·        approved the appointment of Katrina Slone of Knott County to the State Textbook Commission and deferred another appointment until a future meeting

·        approved revisions to the Kentucky Administrative Regulations relating to special education programs

·        approved preschool funding rates for 2007-08

·        approved grade configuration waivers for schools in 44 districts

 

 

      The board agreed to redesignate the Kentucky High School Athletics Association (KHSAA) as its agent to manage high school athletics and took action on a number of proposals and brought by KHSAA:

·        approved Proposals 1, 7, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 19

·        deleted Proposal 6

·        amended Proposals 2 and 9

·        returned Proposals 5, 18 and 21 to the KHSAA for additional study

·        approved Referendum 1 and Referendum 2

 

            The board heard presentations on a variety of other items, including:

·        updates on improvement plans at Iroquois Middle in Jefferson County and Holmes Junior/Senior High in Covington Independent

·        CATS transition issues

·        the status of family resource/youth services centers

·        2007 elementary and secondary legislation

 

The board will hold its annual retreat May 9 and 10 in Bowling Green. The next regular meeting of the board will be June 13 and 14 in Frankfort. More information about the board is available here.
