(FRANKFORT, Ky.) – The Kentucky Department of Education and the Council on Postsecondary Education will host the 20th Annual Academically Proficient African American High School Junior and Senior Conference June 8-9 at the University of Louisville’s Belknap Campus.
The conference is designed to assist rising juniors and seniors (students who are currently sophomore and juniors) in successfully moving from high school to postsecondary education.
The conference’s goals are to:
· expose African American juniors and seniors to the various educational opportunities available throughout Kentucky and the nation
· assist African American juniors and seniors as they transition from high school to postsecondary education to prepare for and adjust to a postsecondary experience
· assist African American students in their efforts to become effective leaders in school and in their communities after graduation
· expose African American students to various academic programs, scholarships, grants, internships and loans available in Kentucky
· assist Kentucky institutions in gaining access to the best and brightest African American students
The conference offers multiple pre-conference activities on June 8, including a student-parent panel session sponsored by the University of Louisville’s O’YES KY Scholars, tours of the campus and planetarium, a welcome dinner and other special events.
Conference workshops begin June 9 with a welcome session at 8:30 a.m. followed by concurrent sessions at 9:30 a.m. Topics covered in the concurrent sessions include:
· financial aid & scholarships
· selecting a college and career
· developing coping skills and effective communication
A career/college fair featuring Kentucky colleges and universities will be held at noon. The conference concludes with a luncheon at 1:30 p.m. featuring a student speaker discussing personal experiences at the University of Louisville.
