STLP participants design projects to help their schools and communities while also meeting the program's six goals:

- Developing activities that enhance the academic, social and emotional growth of students
- Providing leadership opportunities for all students
- Forming innovative learning partnerships
- Forming learning partnerships among students with different technology skills
- Developing activities that benefit communities
- Developing instructional activities that integrate technology,  benefit the school and support KETS (Kentucky Education Technology System)

Student-designed projects are divided into four categories -- instructional, community, technical and entrepreneurial. Some activities qualify as service-learning projects and provide assistance to charities or other local agencies in need. Other activities can be described as entrepreneurial and illustrate the beginning steps of forming a small business.
