(FRANKFORT, Ky.) -- Kentucky middle and high school students won awards for their research and projects at the first Kentucky Science and Engineering Fair (KY-SEF), held April 4 and 5 at Eastern Kentucky University.

KY-SEF was designed to enhance the visibility and importance of science and engineering in Kentucky, expand educational opportunities for middle and high school students and recognize student excellence in science and engineering research.

Awards included university and private scholarships and special awards presented by KY-SEF sponsor corporations and organizations. Sponsors include the Kentucky Department of Education, the Kentucky Cabinet for Workforce Development, the Kentucky Division of Energy, East Kentucky Power Cooperative, the Kentucky Science Fair Endowment, Eastern Kentucky University, the University of Louisville, New Directions Unlimited, the Kentucky Academy of Sciences, Otis Taylor and Benjamin Cummings Publishers.

High school finalists in the KY-SEF competition will represent Kentucky in the annual Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel/ISEF). Intel/ISEF, known as the world's largest pre-college celebration of science, will bring together more than 1,200 students from around the world to compete for $3 million in scholarships, tuition grants, scientific equipment and scientific trips.

The 2003 Intel/ISEF will be held in Cleveland, Ohio, in May. Kentucky hosted the 2002 Intel/ISEF.

A list of award winners follows.
