KENTUCKY SCIENCE & ENGINEERING FAIR SET

            (FRANKFORT, Ky.) -- More than 100 Kentucky middle and high school students will show off their research and projects at the first Kentucky Science and Engineering Fair (KY-SEF), set for April 4 and 5 at Eastern Kentucky University.

            KY-SEF is designed to enhance the visibility and importance of science and engineering in Kentucky, expand educational opportunities for middle and high school students and recognize student excellence in science and engineering research.

Students with the best projects across the state will participate in the 2003 KY-SEF. Students compete in 15 categories: 
-  Behavioral and Social Sciences
- Biochemistry
- Botany
- Chemistry
- Computer Science
- Earth and Space Sciences
- Engineering
- Environmental Science
- Gerontology
- Mathematics
- Medicine and Health
- Microbiology
- Physics
- Zoology
- Team Projects

Awards will include university and private scholarships and special awards presented by KY-SEF sponsor corporations and organizations. Sponsors include the Kentucky Department of Education, the Cabinet for Workforce Development, the Kentucky Division of Power, East Kentucky Power, the Kentucky Science and Engineering Foundation, Eastern Kentucky University, the University of Louisville, New Directions Unlimited, the Kentucky Academy of Sciences, the Kentucky Science and Technology Council and the Kentucky Science Fair Foundation.

High school finalists in the KY-SEF competition will represent Kentucky in the annual Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel/ISEF). Intel/ISEF, known as the world's largest pre-college celebration of science, will bring together more than 1,200 students from around the world to compete for $3 million in scholarships, tuition grants, scientific equipment and scientific trips.

The 2003 Intel/ISEF will be held in Cleveland, Ohio, in May. Kentucky hosted the 2002 Intel/ISEF.
