Advanced Placement Summer Institute in Louisville
The University of Louisville will host an Advanced Placement Summer Institute for teachers on the UofL Belknap campus June 14-18. The courses will be led by experienced College Board-endorsed consultants from across the U.S. The cost is $500, and on-campus housing is available at an additional cost. Feedback needed on Common Core State Standards
The Kentucky Department of Education invites educators and the public to review and provide feedback on the draft Common Core State Standards for English/language arts and mathematics. This feedback will be collected via surveys and submitted to the Council of Chief State School Officers and the National Governors Association for their consideration as they finalize the standards. Kentucky named finalist for Race to the Top funds

Request to delay NCLB reporting and waive related Title I rules submitted
Education Commissioner Terry Holliday has submitted a formal request to the U.S. Department of Education to delay public reporting of NCLB results. This is related to the effects of harsh winter weather and illness on school calendars. See the request here.
2010 Teacher Arts Academies Scheduled
The Kentucky Department of Education, in partnership with the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts (KCPA), will present four Arts Academies for teachers in June 2010. Each academy is a one-week arts education professional development seminar for teachers, focusing on dance and music or drama and visual art. Each academy will accept up to 36 teachers, and applications must be submitted electronically by April 7. To apply, click here. Program Review drafts now available online
Drafts of Program Reviews in writing, arts & humanities and practical living/career studies are now available for review. Informational WebEx meetings to discuss the drafts and answer questions will be held during the week of February 22. These sessions will be of particular interest to non-pilot districts/schools, since they will focus on the process for appropriate uses of the Program Review documents. Training set for Summer Food Service Program
Nine training sessions for the 2010 Summer Food Service program are scheduled for experienced and new sponsors. New Supplemental Educational Services providers sought
Groups and individuals who wish to become Supplemental Educational Services providers in Kentucky may apply for consideration beginning Friday, January 15, 2010 through March 19, 2010. Applicants may become approved to provide tutoring to some students in Kentucky public schools, depending on students’ eligibility for free or reduced-price meals and whether they attend schools that are served by federal Title I, Part A funds and have not made Adequate Yearly Progress for at least two consecutive years. Local organizations that regularly provide services to students are strongly encouraged to apply to become providers. There is a great need for providers in the state’s rural districts.
Hager Preschool named Center of Excellence
Hager Preschool in the Owensboro Independent school district has been designated as a Kentucky Early Childhood Center of Excellence. This award follows the school’s recognition last school year as an Early Childhood Center of Quality, the first step in attaining Center of Excellence status. See news release for more information.
