With the release of Office 2007 and subsequently Windows 7 and Office 2010, the new Ribbon was the least-liked feature in Microsoft’s software according to many surveys.

Many people spent years learning to navigate using the traditional toolbar and suddenly here was a Ribbon designed to “improve” things.

Through a series of tips over the next few months, we will be exploring some of the complaints many people had about the Ribbon and giving tips on how to make the Ribbon work for you.

Complaint: It’s too big and takes up too much space on my screen.

Tip: Click the small arrow located by the help button in the upper right hand corner. The Ribbon is minimized and displays only the tab titles.

When access is needed to a command, click on the tab title and the Ribbon will appear. After making a selection, the Ribbon will minimize on its own, saving space on the screen.
