Standard 5 - Learning Environment - Student, Family & Community Support

The school/district works with families and community groups to remove barriers to learning in an effort to meet the intellectual, social, career and developmental needs of students.

Performance Expectations:
The school leader sets high expectations for all students to learn at higher-level content.

The school leader keeps everyone informed and focused on student achievement.

The school leader makes parents partners in their student's education and creates a structure for parent and educator collaboration.

Indicators for this Standard:
5.1a - Families and communities active partners

Families and the communities are acitve partners in the educational process and work together with the school/district staff to promote programs and services for all students.

5.1b - All students have access to all curriculum
Structures are in place to ensure that all students have access to all the curriculum (e.g., school guidance, FRYSC's, ESS).

5.1c - School provides organizational structure
The school/district provides organizational structures and supports instructional practices to reduce barriers to learning.

5.1d - Student instructional assistance outside of classroom
Students are provided with a variety of opportunities to receive additional assistance to support their learning, beyond the initial classroom instruction.

5.1e - Accurate student record keeping system
The school maintains an accurate student record system that provides timely information pertinent to the student's academic and educational development.

Standard 7:  Leadership - School/district instructional decisions focus on support for teaching and learning, organizational direction, high performance expectations, creating a learning culture, and developing leadership capacity.

Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC):
ISLLC Standard 2:  A school administrator is an educational leader who promotes the success of all students by advocating, nurturing, and sustaining a school culture and instructional program conducive to student learning and staff professional growth.

ISLLC Standard 4:  A school administrator is an educational leader who promotes the success of all students by collaborating with families and community members, responding to diverse community interest and needs, and mobilizing community resources.

The National PTA deals with a variety of education issues and develops current information, programs, and projects encouraging parents to participate in their children's education.

Kentucky Parent Teacher Association (PTA)
Kentucky PTA is an affiliate of the National PTA.  PTA is the largest child advocacy organization in the United States and a leader in increasing the awareness of the benefits of parent involvement.  PTA is a powerful voice for all children, a relevant resource for parents, and a strong advocate for public education.

The Parent Institute
The mission of The Parent Institute is to encourage parent involvement in the education of their children. The Parent Institute publishes a variety of materials including newsletters, booklets, brochures, and videos.

The Standards and Indicators for School Improvement (SISI)
The Standards and Indicators for School Improvement define the elements of whole school improvement that schools can put into effect at the elementary, middle and high school levels in order to produce desired learning results.

Student Performance Standards
In June, 2001, the Kentucky Board of Education accepted new performance standards that resulted from a comprehensive process involving more than 1,600 Kentucky teachers, various advisory groups, and which provided for public input.  These new standards set the stage for the work that lies ahead of Kentucky's educators: To improve the academic achievement of all our students.
