School & District Improvement Planning Checking Implementation & Impact

Last Updated on Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at 10:57 AM

Is your school or district improvement plan working?  The school board, school council and other school and district leaders can only know if they check that the work is on schedule and study evidence that student performance is changing for the better.  This step has long been referred to as an Implementation and Impact Check (I&I Check).

Sample forms for Implementation and Impact are posted for download on this page.  One is a sample KDE format that can be used as is or changed to meet your needs.  The formats were created by Daviess and McCracken County Public Schools.  We offer the samples for your use with the permission of Daviess and McCracken County Public Schools.

Your Implementation and Impact Checks will do the job if:

* Your school board or council receives complete, accurate, specific information on what work is being done.  (Are activities starting on time?  Are they being completed on schedule?  Are planned purchases fitting within the allowed budgets?  Are those listed as the persons responsible all carrying out their tasks?  Or are delays, unexpected costs, or confusion about roles piling up, and putting the overall plan in danger?)

*Your school board or council receives good information on what student performance results the work is producing.  (That means the school needs a systematic approach to classroom assessment, a regular way of collecting that data and presenting it for discussion.)

*Your school board or council digests the implementation data and the impact data and decides where Improvement Plan adjustments are needed.

*The process happens often enough to allow effective solutions when problems appear.

If district policy prescribes a format for documenting Implementation and Impact Check, each school in the district should use that form.  If not, each school may select a form that meets its needs.  Many districts post their Implementation and Impact check sheets on their district web page along with their school and district plans for public review.
