Nutrition Programs

Kentucky Department of Education (KDE)administers several programs that deliver quality nutrition and nutrition education to Kentucky students and other citizens.

 

Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP)
More than 2,000 child care centers, family day care homes and adult day care centers participate in the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), providing breakfasts, lunches, snacks and suppers to more than 44,000 Kentuckians a day.  


 

National School Lunch Program (NSLP)
The oldest of the school nutrition programs, the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides lunches to approximately 500,000 students every day in public, private, and parochial schools and residential child care institutions in Kentucky. School Breakfast Program (SBP)
Kentucky was one of the original pilot states in the School Breakfast Program (SBP) when it began in 1966. Special Milk Program (SMP)
Used by those schools, camps and residential child care institutions that do not participate in the National School Lunch Program or School Breakfast Program; the Special Milk Program (SMP) provides nutritious milk to children enrolled in these facilities and programs.


 

Summer Food Service Program for Children (SFSP)
Bridging the gap when school is not in session, more than 1,000 sites in Kentucky provide almost 2 million breakfasts, lunches and snacks to Kentucky children annually through the Summer Food Service Program for Children (SFSP).
