I was asked by the Legislative Research Commission to make sure you are aware of possible contacts about legislators participating in this year's America's Legislators Back to School Program.
The National Conference of State Legislatures' (NCSL's) annual America's Legislators Back to School Program for the school year 2008-2009 will kick off in September. Members of the Kentucky General Assembly are participating in this nation-wide, bipartisan event and the staff of the Legislative Research Commission will be contacting some of your schools to arrange visits to classrooms. This is the tenth year for the Back to School Program and most of you are familiar with it. However, you can review detailed information about the program (objectives, curriculum, sponsors, participation, etc.) by accessing the NCSL website through the America's Legislators Back to School Program link provided on the LRC webpage or by going directly to the NCSL website at http://www.ncsl.org/public/backsch.htm. Like last year, the program will run throughout the school year. Generally, however, Kentucky Legislators will visit schools from the September kick-off date through mid-November. Visits beyond that date can be arranged, but will be more difficult after the 2009 General Assembly convenes.
NCSL will again provide age-appropriate printed and video resource materials for students' use during a legislator's visit to your classroom. In addition, on-line resources and lesson plans are also available for teachers participating in the program.
