Kentucky law (KRS 158.6453) requires that each school district and public school produce and distribute school and district report cards. Regulation (703 KAR 5:140) requires that the school and district cards be placed upon the Kentucky Department of Education Website and that printed copies be supplied by schools to parents lacking Internet access. The Kentucky Department of Education and the Kentucky Board of Education are charged with ensuring that the requirements of statute andregulation are fulfilled.
The purpose of the School Report Card is to keep parents and community members informed about what is going on in each Kentucky school. It is an opportunity for schools to highlight their strengths and explain what they are doing to improve on any weaknesses. This helps open the lines of communication between the school, the homes of its students, and its local community. This document has a significant and beneficial public impact.
The elements of the School Report Card are:
• A School Report Card: A document that is to be produced by every school and district each year and to be made available on the Kentucky Department of Education Website. Schools are required to print copies of the card for parents lacking Internet access.
• Information above and beyond that in the School Report Card linked to the cards on the KDE Website when available.
The format and content for these publications was developed through an open process that involved 16 parent focus groups, the School Curriculum, Assessment and Accountability Council (SCAAC) and dozens of Kentucky educators.
